CHAPTER 24

Sky

Sitting half up beside Amber, Sky rocked stiffly on the same hammock. That bubblegum scent of Amber’s was less obnoxious now. Mostly from washing that girl several times a day, just like Scarlet and Lexie suggested.

More like insisted.

Especially how her golden bracelets insisted. The way they tightened so badly and painfully and—no.

Focus on her task.

Sky even slept in the same hammock. To ensure if Amber woke up, she didn’t run over to Dirk before he recovered.

Before they were really to try that technique again.

But ever since, this hammock’s net creaked so loud, under all their weight, yet none of the rope bit into them, no, it felt kinda cozy, despite her being nearly nude with these ridiculous rings as a bra and miniskirt.

The ceiling was as dark as her future at this rate. Even her sisters were gone now. All of them. Even Azura.

And it was all her fault.

Why the Heavenlies refused to tell her what her crime even was …

Amber moaned awake.

“Sky? Where … oh! I didn’t think you liked me this much, but …”

Sky tsked at Amber’s shock, and stupid comment.

“I’m here just to make sure you don’t dash back over to Dirk. That’s all. Don’t get—”

Amber hugged Sky?

“I know. You want him first, don’t you?”

Her warmth was just weird but—

“Scarlet got him and we …”

Amber hugged her even tighter?

“Can beat that snake girl—if we work together, right?”

Sky sighed into the long anemona hair of Amber’s. Amber huffed. Even her breath was crazy bubblegummy. Worse than Pearl’s had been.

Yet Amber looked right into Sky’s eyes.

Then pouted? Even cuter than when Zara did.

“No wonder,” Amber said, “Giving up so quickly. Don’t! Scarlet didn’t even forbid him from loving us back either.”

“Exactly,” Sky said, “She’s too sweet to—“

Amber covered Sky’s mouth. Even her hand tasted bubblegummy. And not in a bad way, actually.

“Enough excuses,” Amber said, “You want Dirk, right?”

Sky nodded. Of course she did. She was his genie now. What genie didn’t want their master in some sort of way?

“What kind of genie gives up so easily?” Amber said, “I even died once. For a good cause and all but death isn’t … good for us demons. Not that I regret it. I don’t. Not at all. But this is my second chance at life. I’m going to have it all. All the love I missed in my first life. And I mean all. You should too. If not for yourself, then for all your sisters. Okay?”

Sky blinked. Amber … had a point. Moping about her dead sisters wouldn’t do anyone any good, but living a better life, one they’d all want … they’d never forgive her no matter what but … at least …

Sky nodded. Gave Amber’s hand a gentle squeeze.

Even if her bracelets squeezed her back. Hard. Making her own squeeze far weaker.

Amber grimaced.

“You thought that squeeze was gentle, didn’t you?”

Sky gasped. Nodded.

“It wasn’t.” Amber said “Until those bracelets squeezed your wrists.”

Sky … slumped. If she didn’t control her strength better, she might actually hurt Dirk. These bracelets weren’t a complete disaster.
